What is the best non-surgical treatment for sciatica?

No single treatment is best for everyone, because sciatica has different causes. It usually gets better in a few weeks to a few months, and conservative care such as chiropractic adjustments and targeted exercise is one option. At Lakeside Spine & Wellness we find the likely cause first, then build a plan. Severe or worsening symptoms need a doctor right away.

What sciatica is

Sciatica is leg pain that comes from irritation of a nerve root in the lower back. The pain usually travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of one leg, sometimes to the foot. Common causes include a bulging or herniated disc, narrowing of the spinal canal and tight muscles near the nerve.

  • Sharp, burning or electric pain down one leg
  • Pain that is worse when you sit, cough or sneeze
  • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
  • Pain in one leg that is stronger than the back pain

In the drawing, the red areas show where one nerve is inflamed. Tap a red spot to see what a calmer nerve looks like. This is a simple illustration to explain the idea. Your own exam shows what is going on in your back.

How we approach sciatica

We test your reflexes, strength, and sensation to see which nerve is involved, and we check how your spine and hips move. Digital X-rays on site help rule out structural problems. If your signs suggest something that needs a medical test such as an MRI, we refer you.

Care often combines gentle adjustments, nerve-gliding and core exercises, and advice on how to sit, walk, and sleep while the nerve calms down. For some disc-related cases we may discuss spinal decompression as one part of a plan.

How long does sciatica last?

The NHS says sciatica usually gets better in a few weeks to a few months, but it can sometimes last longer. If your pain is not improving, or it keeps coming back, tell us. We will change the plan or send you to a doctor who can look further.

This is an emergency: go to an ER now

The NHS says to get emergency care if you notice any of these:

  • Difficulty starting to pee, being unable to pee, or not being able to control when you pee
  • Not noticing when you need to poo, or not being able to control it
  • Numbness around or under the genitals, or around the bottom
  • Pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in both legs

Common questions

Can a chiropractor help with sciatica?

It can help some people. Spinal manipulation and exercise are among the conservative options used for sciatica from low back causes. We examine you first, and we do not promise a result.

Is walking good for sciatica?

Staying active is usually better than complete rest, and gentle walking is often fine. If walking sends pain down your leg, stop, and tell us at your visit so we can adjust your plan.

Do I need an MRI?

Not always. We refer you for one if symptoms are severe, getting worse, not improving or point to something serious.

What is the difference between sciatica and back pain?

Back pain stays in the back. Sciatica sends pain, tingling, or numbness down the leg, usually on one side. Both can happen together.

Who is the best chiropractor for sciatica in Round Rock?

The best fit is a clinic that examines you properly, explains the cause and refers you when you need a doctor. That is the approach at Lakeside Spine & Wellness.
