Should I see a chiropractor after a car accident?

Get checked soon, even if you feel fine, because neck symptoms such as whiplash can take several hours to start. If you have severe pain, a head injury or numbness, go to an emergency room first. Once you are cleared, we can examine you, take X-rays on site and keep records of your findings and care.

Why symptoms show up late

After a crash, adrenaline can hide pain. The NHS says whiplash symptoms can take several hours to start. Pain can also spread into the shoulders, arms, or low back.

  • Neck stiffness or pain when turning your head
  • Headaches that start after the accident
  • Shoulder and upper back pain
  • Low back pain or tingling in the arms or legs

What to do after an accident

  • Call 911 if anyone is hurt, and go to an ER for severe pain, head injury or numbness
  • Exchange information and take photos of the vehicles and scene
  • Get checked as soon as you can, even if you feel okay
  • Keep copies of reports, bills and notes about your symptoms

How we help

We examine your neck and spine, take digital X-rays on site when your exam calls for them, and explain what we found. We keep records of your findings and care.

The Texas Department of Insurance says Texas auto policies include Personal Injury Protection (PIP) unless you reject it in writing, so check your own policy. We cannot give legal advice or promise what an insurer will pay.

Get medical care first if you have any of these

These signs need a doctor or an emergency room before a chiropractic visit:

  • Head injury, confusion or loss of consciousness
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm, a hand or a leg
  • Severe neck or back pain that painkillers do not ease, or that starts right after the crash
  • A sudden electric-shock feeling in the neck and back, or trouble walking or sitting upright
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Chest or abdominal pain

Common questions

How soon after the accident should I be seen?

As soon as you can safely do so. Symptoms can take several hours to start, so feeling fine right after a crash does not rule out an injury. If you have emergency signs, go to an ER first.

Will I need X-rays?

It depends on your exam. We have digital X-ray on site for when it will help, and we explain why we recommend it.
